Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane stitched a brilliant 162-run partnership for the fourth wicket but England spinners struck twice in quick succession in the final session removing both set batsmen to get their side back in the game on Day 1 of the second Test in Chennai. India lost three key wickets in the final session but would be the happier of the two as they reached 300/6 at stumps on the first day. Rishabh Pant entertained the Chennai fans with some expansive shots finishing the day at 33 not out, with Axar Patel unbeaten on five. Rohit made batting look easy on a turning track and raced away to his seventh Test hundred off just 130 balls. He and Rahane combined to steady the Indian innings after they had lost both Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli in quick succession in the morning session. The duo strung together a crucial partnership for the fourth wicket and completely dominated the middle session as India didn’t lose any wickets. Earlier, India got off to a poor start losing opener Shubman Gill in the second over of the innings. Gill departed for a three-ball duck as he shouldered arms and was trapped leg before by a Olly Stone delivery. Rohit and Pujara added 85 runs for the second wicket but India lost both Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli as England pushed hosts on the backfoot before the lunch break. While Pujara got out to Jack Leach for 21, Kohli was sent packing by Moeen Ali, who cleaned him up for a duck. (SCORECARD)

Olly Stone finished the day’s proceedings with a full toss which almost carried to the short midwicket fielder. No harm done and India will be the happier side at the end of day’s play with scoreboard reading 300/6 and Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 33 and debutant Axar Patel not out on five.

Ashwin charges down the track and goes for forward defensive shot, ball comes off bat and pad and goes straight to the short-leg fielder. Root gets his first wicket as Ashwin departs for 13.
Pant survives after review!
Rishabh Pant was adjudged caught behind by the on-field umpire and he reviewed it immediately. The replay shows there was no bat involved and Pant survives.
The mid-off was in and Rishabh Pant goes aerial and it almost carries all the way to the fence, crossing the ropes after one bounce.
Rishabh Pant is in full T20 mode here and he gave a glimpse of that by playing a reverse sweep shot behind deep backward point.

R Ashwin takes a couple of strides down the track and guides it behind point and comes for two runs.
R Ashwin bisects the gap on the off side with a brilliant cover drive which fetches him his first boundary.
Rishabh Pant comes dancing down the track and lofts it over midwicket fence for a huge six. This battle between him and Leach is getting intense here.
Jack Leach bowls short and wide, Rishabh Pant backs off and punches it away on the off side to get off the mark with a boundary.

Ravichandran Ashwin gets off the mark with a single and brings up 250 runs on the board for his side.

Ajinkya Rahane goes for a sweep, misses the line of the ball and it goes on to rattle his stumps and England are right back in the game. He goes for 67.

Rohit Sharma goes aerial against Jack Leah and finds the fielder at deep square leg where Moeen Ali makes no mistake and takes simple catch. The ball bounced more than what Rohit anticipated and he couldn’t keep his shot on the ground.

Ben Foakes’ brilliant glovework almost provided England with the breakthrough but the lack of conclusive evidence forced the TV umpire to favour the batsman.

Joe Root, in his first over, has managed to create a couple of close chances against Rohit Sharma, who played him with extra caution and didn’t score any runs.
